Principal’s Message

Kia ora Parents and Whanau

One thing the recent pandemic and ensuing lock downs has taught us is the importance of technology and understanding how to use it effectively, not only as a communication tool but a way to overcome isolation and assisting us in making our lives easier. When we think of technology, we immediately think of computers; this is not always the case. The definition of technology is the science or study of the practical or industrial arts and applied science. Thank you to Mrs Sonia Gobindlal and Mr Marc Rowlinson for their support and guidance in helping our students reach the quality of projects that will be on display

This week, our students will be acknowledge for their understanding and prowess of technology when the finalists in our own school Science and Technology Expo go on to be judged at the North Shore Science Fair. I would like to acknowledge their efforts in continuing to be innovative and entrepreneurial in their designs and projects even during lock down.

A further acknowledgment of William Colman who designed and built an anti-capsizer for his yacht. The device allows the main sheet on his yacht to release when the boat hits a certain angle, stopping it from capsizing in high winds.

William was recognised for his innovative design and development at the recent North Harbour AIMES Awards, winning the top Innovation Award, coming with prize money of $3000. William will use this money to further develop his design.

It was also great to see past students, Jasmine Jarred and Declan Squire acknowledged for Excellence Awards in their respective fields of Technology and Performing Arts.

I would like to acknowledge teachers, Mr Mark Jensen, Miss Chloe Smith and  Mr Adam Martin who recently performed the Lesson, a play by Eugene Ionesco. The venue for the play was our school drama room allowing community members over 5 evenings to view live theatre at its best. I would like to commend the actors on a superb and engaging performance, it was fantastic to see teachers who are passionate about the arts showcasing their talents.

As we move further into the term it is so positive to see the many cultural and sporting events now underway (highlighted in this dispatch). Obviously over the last terms there has been a hiatus on out of school activities; restarting these has been so positive for our students and staff.

Next week, I am again, jumping of the sky tower (Bungee attached!) in the Drop the Boss promotion. Drop the Boss is a fund raiser promoted by the Graeme Dingle Foundation who support our young people in helping them building resilience, develop self-belief and gain the appropriate skills to help them navigate through life.

If you would like to support this great organisation, please go to the Give a Little page and click on Graeme Dingle.

Nga mihi
