Towards the end of term 1, the NX Maori and Pasifika students were lucky enough to have Ki o Rahi Tamaki Makaurau organisation come into our school every Thursday to introduce and teach the traditional Maori game of Ki o Rahi. A group of Y7 and Y8 students were selected to participate in the first-ever Ki o Rahi Zone day from these workshops. Each team had to field 4 girls and 4 boys. To play this game to a high level, the teams needed to play fast, work well as a team, demonstrate great listening skills and have very good ball handling skills. Both our teams mastered the game well. The Y7 team was unlucky and played a very tight game against MBIS, losing 7 – 5, which stopped them from advancing through to the semi-finals. However, the Y8 team was extremely dominant throughout the day beating teams by at least 20 to 30 points. The final was a little closer against MBIS with us winning 25 – 8 and taking home the title of the first-ever Ki o Rahi North Harbour Champions! We are currently waiting for the date of the Auckland Champs.
