NX Football Girls in Penalty Shoot out at Auckland Champs

The Year 7 girls had a very strong day of football at the championships. They had two large pool wins with no goals conceded and some outstanding football played. In the semi-final the girls took down Glendowie with a very confident and assured 6-0 victory which included a top bin effort, from outside the box, by Eliza Mersh-Kearney. The final was very much a game of two sides in which NX was far the better team in the first. An outstanding half volley in the top corner from the edge of the box by Sachi Terada saw NX take a well-deserved lead. The girls then had the chance to double their lead and confirm their dominance from the penalty spot. Unfortunately, they were unable to take the advantage and went into half time only 1-0 up. In the second half the girls played with their backs to the wall, displaying some excellent defending. However, in the dying seconds the referee awarded Remuera a spot kick and they equalised. This meant the game went straight to a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the girls, NX were on the wrong end of a few close misses and we had to settle for the accolade of the second best team in Auckland. This is still an excellent achievement and one to be proud of.
