Our Northcross Kapa Haka welcomed new Year 7’s, teachers and whanau to our school with their Karanga. Māori are tangata whenua, the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand, and are traditionally the first voices heard when groups are meeting. After the karanga, Mr Jensen also welcomed everyone with a korero that acknowledged forests and all creatures that are part of the kaupapa of the schools’ treasured waharoa. Mrs Rameka answered on behalf of the manuhiri – linking us to all who have gone before. Principal Mr Tredray and Mr Hughes further welcomed everyone before the Kapa Haka sang a concluding waiata and the sharing of kai (food) in class groups.
