Maori Pasifika Celebration

At the start of each year, all Māori and Pasifika students are given the opportunity to sign up for a range of cultural workshops that honour identity, creativity, and community. This year, students participated in a Boys’ Carving Rōpū, Pūrākau (Storytelling) Rōpū, Girls’ Pasifika Dance Rōpū, Flax Weaving, Pasifika Tapa Art Rōpū, and a House Panel Rōpū. These workshops took place every Friday throughout Terms 2 and 3, giving students two full terms of rich, hands-on cultural learning guided by skilled mentors.

Our celebration evening was a true highlight. We were honoured to welcome guest speaker Nyle Spencer, the current Head Girl of Rangitoto College and of Fijian descent. She spoke powerfully about her achievements throughout high school, her goals for the future, and shared inspiring advice with our students.
Throughout the evening, the Pasifika Art group, Flax Weaving group, and Carving group proudly displayed their stunning completed work. The Girls’ Pasifika Dance Rōpū performed three beautiful Cook Island dances taught by Jeziarah Holmes, showcasing confidence, pride, and cultural excellence. The Pūrākau group delivered a highly entertaining retelling of the legend Rona and the Moon—another creative collaboration supported by Mr Jensen.
A very special moment of the night was the presentation of the House Panels, created by the House Panel Rōpū with support from Ako Learning Resources—Israel and Trina Wirihana. These panels were presented and blessed by our kaumātua, Mel Whaanga, and will be proudly displayed in our gym for many years to come.
To recognise students’ dedication, awards and certificates were presented for commitment and excellence. We ended the evening with a shared kai alongside our Northcross whānau—a beautiful, heart-warming way to conclude the evening.
