Over the last few weeks, we have been celebrating Maths Problem solving, perseverance and collaboration as students learnt to solve word problems at speed. The challenge was to solve 20 questions in 30 minutes – as quickly as possible – fastest wins!
Junior Year 5 and 6 Mathex: 7th June saw 19 Primary schools bring over 200 students to Northcross to compete in our Junior Mathex Competition. In this fast-paced Maths problem solving competition, students worked in teams to take out top honours – with schools attending locally such as Sherwood, Glamorgan and Browns Bay and further afield such as Matakana and Hauraki to take up the challenge of maths problem solving and hope to win medals for themselves and their schools! Congratulations to Pinehill for taking first place – managing 100% in just under 15 minutes! Pinehurst came in a close second and a Browns Bay team placed third.
Northcross School Mathex: Across Northcross, classes practiced a range of problem solving skills including understanding what was being asked and getting rid of the words that were just there to distract or trip you up! Every class then entered at least one team of four into the school Mathex Competition.
Prizes on offer included awards for best runner who demonstrated the NX values of resilience and respect, prizes for placing and badges for all who participated. Over 500 students competed for top honours in two 30 minute challenges – year 7 and year 8. A huge congratulations to the Year 8 champion team of Room 54: Gordon Peng, Vincent Xu, Joshua Liu and Mylo Withers and the Year 7 champion team of Room 55: Jonathan Xu, Corey Zhang, Yigu Ye and Jason Hao.
We would also like to acknowledge the top runners recognised for their resilience, perseverance and respect demonstrated: the Year 7 runners for Rm 8, team 2, Room 51, 13, 17, and 11 Team 1 and for Year 8: Liam Rm 31, Luke Rm 53, Sophie Rm 30, Bella Rm 10, Kodai Rm 49, Theo Rm 60, Flynn for Totara team and the Nikau team 2 runner.
North Harbour Amazingness: Lastly, Northcross hosted 103 teams from across the North Shore, challenging them for first. Congratulations to our Northcross teams for placing first and third at Year 7, and second in the year 8 competition (just 12 seconds behind AJHS in first). Jonathan, Corey, Yigu and Jason are our new Year 7 North Harbour champions (Picture below) with Cyrus Zhou, Jessie Dong, Daniel Fang and Rada Pazniak winning bronze. Our Year 8 silver medal winners were Gordon, Vincent, Joshua and Mylo. Special thanks to our student leaders who helped host all these events.
All students and teams should be proud of themselves and the perseverance, resilience and top mathematical skills they demonstrated.
